Students will apply their scale drawing skills and the tools of hand and/or digital embroidery to create a group art piece. A single image on regular-sized paper will be divided into smaller pieces. Each student will scale their piece up by the same scale factor to create a larger but identical image. Then, they’ll transfer their paper designs to fabric using either hand embroidery, or a digital design and the embroidery machine (I recommend having students do a draft using hand embroidery even if using the embroidery machine, but this is time-consuming so not a requirement). Once individual pieces are finished, students will reassemble the image. This activity provides a lot of opportunity for reflection, collaboration and metacognition, because mistakes in scaling or execution will be visible in the way the final project comes together.
